New Life directions - make money, get control, get results

Hey folks,

If you look down this blog a bit you'll get the feeling I was actively promoting an MLM launch. I was. In January.

As a direct marketer I try to follow my heart, but I also look at the numbers.

Looking at the numbers from that last MLM launch I was involved with... well - the amount of traffic and leads you would have to generate for that particular program would be A LOT for a measly payout of $12 a month.

By my estimate, about 800 targeted visitors for each paid signup.

Yikes!

The numbers don't work. Such a low rate of prospects upgrading to paid members isn't acceptable to me and I cannot in good conscience lead you into such a losing proposition.

The product was targeted at "internet marketers" yet looking at my own numbers I gotta conclude that people just didn't want what we were selling... or they already had something else that was working for them.

I learned some stuff from the launch.... and particularly my belief that MLM is a very difficult way to make money online was validated.

Not because MLM is bad, but because the payouts per customer are too low. For a variety of other reasons MLM customer retention is challenging in the online marketplace: but in a nutshell most of your customers will quit because they aren't making money, because their customers quit for the same reason.

Recruiting is the easy part. It is getting people to the point where they are ready to commit to building a business with the program that is challenging.

Is there a solution?

Well, I've got one.

No, this isn't a bunch of tripe about "attraction marketing" - most of that stuff is B.S. - this is about building an iron cage around your prospect so when he is ready to reach out and get started YOU and YOUR BUSINESS are the first to get serious consideration.

And frankly if it were simple to do this, everybody would be doing it.

But then again, you've tried the "easy" stuff haven't you?

And what did you get?

A pocket full of nothing, I'll bet.

In the end if you go for mediocre solutions you'll get mediocre results... and in the online marketing economy and in the home business industry mediocre results are not what you get involved to get... yet why the cookie-cutter lead-capture pages? Why are people trying to be "leaders" yet hiding behind their computers?

There IS a lot to it. I know how to do this stuff. I teach it too - at a level you won't find elsewhere.

Jaguar Marketing Tanks - Here's A Better Solution

NewsFlash: Jaguar Marketing System appears to have crashed-and-burned and the parent company Is not longer supporting it. My most sincere apologies to anyone who purchased a license recently.

I got screwed by the company shutting it's doors too. I'm not bitter, actually - but I did have to scramble fast to finish a project that I've been working on for months - my own ControlPosition marketing platform.

ControlPosition is my answer to the generic, cookie-cutter flavor-of-the-month money-making systems. It's a system for building a real business... not something that will be hot for 60 days and then sales will slow to a trickle.... and honestly that IS what will happen when you jump into these "flash movie fad" programs...

Apparently we have been in a recession in the USA since December 2007 and are something like half-way through it. I do know that I am making money in this hard economy even while other people aren't. Of course I have the advantage of having a lot of experience at making money without a job.

The other day my girlfriend saw me reading a book she’d seen
me reading before.

She was puzzled. “Why are you reading the same books over
and over again?” she said.

“To learn this stuff better,” I said.

Well, that didn’t make sense to her. “You mean you didn’t
understand it the first time?”

“It’s not that, dear. This is mastery-level advertising
and persuasion stuff... You don’t just get it by going
through it once,”

“Well, you must have bad reading retention. I never
read a book more than once. I don’t have time to do that,”

Now I’m starting to feel like she doesn’t understand me at
all, because I think I’m pretty clever to be learning this
stuff so intently and she’s basically implying that any
normal person reads a book and moves - so I try to be
clever and challenge her, “Do you mean to tell me that
when you read a book you get all the information out of it
and then you never have to look at it again? Is that how
you learn?” I said.

“No! I’m more of a hands-on learner anyway,” she said...
effectively heading me off at the pass - because we are
all hands-on learners.

She deflected what I was implying - mainly that
it’s incredibly arrogant for most of us to think we can absorb
a great book in one reading. I’m not talking about fiction
or any book you read in the bathroom either, I’m talking
about business and marketing books written by people with
years of experience in the trenches of advertising.

I’m a hands-on leaner too. The problem of saying ,”I’m
a hands on learner. I learn when somebody shows me,”
is that when you say that you are also telling world that
you expect a teacher to show up or you’ll just sit on your
ass and not learn anything.

For fans of “the Secret” and other “law of attraction” stuff
this is valuable. If you sit around waiting for “hands-on”
teachers to show up you’ll probably mostly get sweaty
guys in dirty tank tops showing you how to flip burgers
or dig ditches... Because it’s in the manual labor trades
where “hands-on” learners end up being “hands-on” teachers.

Saying, “I’m a hands on learner,” is counterproductive to
your success because it’s a self-imposed limitation.

Here’s an example:

I had a cabinet-making business before I got into doing
marketing... in fact I got into marketing in order to sell
my cabinetry. I did most of the work myself but sometimes
the jobs were big and I needed help with the heavy lifting
and sanding and things. I hired guys from time to time...

Now I had this pleasant fellow working for me on one
job and he was very excited about what we were doing -
thrilled with the idea of learning a skilled trade like
woodworking.

“I read every woodworking book I could get my hands on,” I told
him, “a lot of my skills are things that I read about and
I studied the advice of the authors of the books and magazine
articles.” Then I showed him the 60-odd books I had
in my woodworking library and suggested he borrow a
couple so he could learn about the trade.

“I’m not really into reading,” he said,” I like to learn
by having people show me how to do things.”

That was it. He was only interested in learning what little
I would show him as we went along. Now I had a lot
to teach, but his apparatus for learning was very limited...
And it was going to hold him back from learning
the skills he would need to earn a decent wage at the
business.

Now I am not suggesting that we don’t all learn from experience.

That’s not the case, obviously. We all learn a lot of
our most practical skills from experience, getting
our own wisdom and sense of what works and what
doesn’t work along the way.

Ok. We are all hands-on learners. That’s a big part of how
learning happens.

But if YOU want to succeed in your own home-based business
using the internet - are you going to find somebody to teach
you everything one-on-one?

Are you going to spend 7 years apprenticing in an advertising
agency to learn about marketing? Work your way up from
the mail-room to the boardroom?

Are you going to quit your job and go to work as an assistant
for some internet guru for less mon.ey?

No. You aren’t . And you don’t need to.

What you need to do to succeed in this industry is self-educate
yourself.

That means reading.

Books. Some of them more than once.

price, exclusivity, and service - the battleground of Direct Marketing

I'll put this in perspective - mine at least.

In Direct Marketing there are only 3 possible advantages
you can offer your prospects that will get them to buy.

Just 3.

Price, Exclusivity, and Service.

Price.
If you can offer the same goods the prospect wants to
buy at a lower price you'll get interest. Some of
the great direct marketing fortunes were built on
price appeal - usually having to do with economy of
scale in manufacturing durable goods and food. Of
course you would have to convince your buyers that
what they are getting isn't substandard crap. Same
thing with digital products - drop the price too
much and people assume you are selling garbage.

Exclusivity.
Do you think there is a reason that people jump at
the opportunity to pay thousands of dollars for
information products? It's exclusivity, having
something other people cannot have - association
with people they admire and look up to - which,
as strange as it is, is something people do to
people who have more money... like powerful promoters -
Gurus, as you call them.

You can make any product/service exclusive but
obviously you have to back up your claims.

Service.
This is where YOU, the little guy, can compete.
The so-called gurus are buried in customer service
issues - so they have to outsource them to low
paid employees who don't alwasy do a good job.

If you were to offer true superior service you would
have an advantage.

To a large extent the goal of any direct marketing
business (which is all of us here) is to get a
Genuine Economic Advantage - meaning you have such
a good long-term profit system on the back-end -
up-selling and client-retention - that you can afford
to lose more money than the competition on the front
end costs of getting the customers.

Yeah, you ARE fighting an uphill battle against
entrenched, better financed competition, but YOU
CAN WIN! by choosing to compete by out-servicing
the larger competition with a narrower niche
market.

The best way I know to start to understand how to
compete is to talk to your potential customers...
on the phone is best. Email and blog responses
are pale in comparison because some of your best
data will come from people who only open up on
the phone - and even then it takes some skill to
get that to happen - it's called persuasion.

make excuses, that is.

hi.

I have a friend... totally sweet guy - who is so
buried in excusitis he cannot see a way to get
out of his current situation.

Now my friend has a lot of sa!es experience - but
for the last 5 or more years he has been pounding the
city pavement, going door-to-door, getting yelled
at and getting doors slammed in his face...

...to sell curb painting.

Curb painting. You know the guys that paint your
address on the curb for $20? That's my friend.
He sells the service, this other guy paints the
numbers.

They are lucky, and I mean lucky, to get $100 a day
each doing this... yet because it's something my
friend has been doing for a while and he is used
to it he keeps doing it - all the while professing
that he "wants" to earn more and get off his feet...

Yet the un-fulfilling, unprofitable, hard-on-your-body
work he is doing is, perversely, within his comfort
zone. As twisted as it may seem he is unable to
actually take action and create the movement towards
a more meaningful, easier, more m0ney-making way of
life.

Weird?

You bet it is. My friend is an extreme case. He's
genuinely suffering. He's in his 50s and his body
is getting wrecked with what he is doing. His case
is not so extreme as the woman who stays with a guy
who beats the crap out of her - but it represents
the same sort of boxed-in thinking.

You've probably heard this stuff before. It's a common
thread running through all the personal development
books you've looked at - books like "Think and Grow
Rich"- which, as dated as it is in some ways, is
still as concise and relevant in most of the ways
that matter today.

Robert Ringer wrote a book called "Action - Nothing
Happens Until Something Moves" - it's all right there
in the title. You won't see any kind of positive
change in your life or income unless you take
action and move in the right direction.

You don't have to get the direction perfect - or even
have a real clear idea of where you are going... just
the desire to move forward and the will to start doing
something about it.

I suffer from inertia too. There are all kinds of
things that are on a back-burner for me. It's
not like you have to be this crazy Type-A person to
succeed in your own business but you do have to create
motion on an ongoing, daily basis. I'm a highly
easygoing person but I set goals and get to them
in a roundabout way - so I can understand what my
friend is going through...

It's just that sometimes the forward MOTION is so
slow it's not actually happening at all.

One symptom of this is Excusitis and all it's
variations like:

"I'm getting ready to get started"
"I'm still getting the information I need to make a decision"
"It's not a good time because of the economy"
"It's not a good time because of XYZ"

The time is never perfect! You will never be perfectly
ready to start anything! The difference between people
who get results and people who don't is simple...

It's courage.

It takes courage to put yourself on the line and
take on a challenge. Yet that is exactly how successful
people in all areas of life operate. They take
on new challenges not only to succeed, but to also
fail and learn and correct their course until
they figure out how to succeed.

This is why success is said to be a journey, not
a destination.

I know you are afraid of failure. I know you are
afraid you aren't good enough, or smart enough to get
what you really want - a life of f!nancial security -
your own business you can run from home and where
you answer to no one but yourself.

There is no time like now to start moving towards
getting results. How long are you going to wait?

Note: I've been away from the Blogosphere for awhile - I moved from Smoggy Los Angeles county to Western Massachusetts. Moving is a crazy process so I took time off from the 'net while I was getting situated and settled. All in all it took close to 3 months because we traveled a lot while we were looking for a place to settle.

may change that. Here's an inspiring and thoughtful piece
by writer Bob Bly. You can find his books on Amazon.com -
he's one of the great freelance business writers of our time
with something like 70 books under his belt - I only hope some
day the switch will click that allows me to be 1/2 as prolific.

The following article is about starting a new career or business
as you age. Can you believe that at 37 even I feel to old to
get started with some things? I even think I'm too old to
get to be a really good guitar-player, when the truth is that
I'm just not currently making the time to improve.

In a lot of areas - guitar among them - you could get really,
really good in 3 years - become an expert. Seriously. Wes
Montgomery, the Jazz legend, started playing guitar at age 19 -
and was touring with Lionel Hampton 3 years later. 19 years
may strike you as young - but among good guitar players many
have been playing for 5-10 years at that age.

The point is that if you are inspired to do something age
cannot hold you back.

I'm a passionate student of Chinese Qi-Gong and Yoga - old
sciences from the Orient. In these traditions it's very possible
to grow in power as you age - or rather, trade youthful
exuberance and lack of focus for the quiet forcefulness
that comes from knowing what you want.

Knowing what YOU want is the key to getting it. I was re-reading
Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich" last night and the

The Cut-Off Age for Getting Into a New Career or Business

At what age are you too old to start a new career or business?

I have thought at various times in my life (I am now 51) that the cut-off age was 50... 60... or even 70.

There were two reasons I believed you'd reach a point where starting over just wasn't practical anymore.

The first, and lesser, was sheer age and lifespan: the idea that when there are many more years behind you than ahead of you, your time to enjoy the fruits of whatever labors you pursue is too limited.

The second reason I believed there was a cut-off date for starting a new career, learning a new trade, or launching a new small business was lack of experience.

For instance, one of the many careers I considered in my youth was the law. But I decided pursuing that in my later years was impractical.

Reason: Say, hypothetically, you were to graduate law school at age 45. You compete against two groups.

The first group is other 45-year-old lawyers who are the same age as you - but have 20 years of law experience vs. your zero years.

The other group you compete against is your classmates. Like you, they are new to the law. But being in their 20s and single, instead of 45 and having a mortgage and three kids in college, they can afford to work for starting salaries too small to meet your needs.

However, actor Abe Vigoda has changed my mind about all this. And my opinion today is that it is NEVER too late to learn new things, start a new business, switch careers, or go into a different industry. (Abe Vigoda, if the name does not ring a bell, is the dour-faced actor famous for playing the character Fish on the TV sitcom "Barney Miller.")

On the Internet recently, I read a short interview with Vigoda, who is still a working actor at age 87. It reminded me that his big break was his first movie, "The Godfather," in which he played Sal Tessio.

Well, "The Godfather" was released in 1972. So if you do the math, Vigoda didn't begin his movie career until he was over 50. More impressive is that, at age 87, Vigoda - who, pardon me, has a slightly cadaverous appearance that makes him look ready for the Old Folks Home - is still a competitive handball player.

If Abe Vigoda could get his first movie role at over 50 - beating out actors his age who had decades more credentials and experience - then I am convinced that you and I can start a new career or business at any age.

As an older entrepreneur or career changer, you will likely have some advantages over your younger colleagues, peers, and competitors - such as greater life experience and wisdom to draw upon when making decisions.

You may have some disadvantages, too - including (possibly) less energy, less flexibility, and less adaptability to new technologies and methods. Then again, maybe not. It depends on your personality - and your circumstances. If you are a retired empty-nester, you may actually have more time, freedom, and flexibility, not less.

If you are still working for a paycheck because you have to and not because you want to, it may take a greater degree of courage and fortitude to make any major business, career, or life change. But I know from firsthand experience that 50 is not too old to make a major change. And from that, I am guessing that your age won't stop you, either.

I started a small online information marketing business as I was closing in on my fiftieth birthday. I kept my day job as a freelance copywriter, while putting in long hours to get the new business started. But today, I earn a six-figure passive income from that business, selling information products on the Internet and "working" only an hour or two a day. Meanwhile, entering a new field has energized and renewed me in a way I never thought possible.

If your gut tells you that you are ready for a change, you probably are.

I close with this piece of wisdom from Milton Hershey, founder of Hershey Chocolate:

"I have often been asked - What is the best age for producing? I know only one answer, the age you are now."

Think and Succeed

Thinking is hard. That's why people don't want to do it. Thinking
is demanding and can be draining - and in fact many of our Buyers
are looking for solutions that absolve them of the responsibility
to think for themselves!

When I was younger I was a hand-crafter of all sorts of goods. It
was fun to make stuff... but selling it and getting a good price was
a serious challenge for me. Eventually I woke up and realized that
I was marketing goods to people who didn't have much disposable
income so when they chose to buy from me they were eliminating
all sorts of other buying options.

This reframed the whole equation of what I wanted my business
activities to be built around. Eventually I came to a simple, almost
brutal formula:

- Find Buyers and sell to them at a high profit.

The information-marketing business is ideal for this. Eventually
as a learned more and more about that business I became
more passionate about the business itself - even if the product
was inherently less interesting than custom-made craft products.

The R.esearch part of it is the toughest in many ways because
you or I will have a lot of great ideas that are just to difficult to
find profitable buyers for.

It's easy to fall "in love" with our own ideas or products and pour
time and money into them long after we should have realized that
the market is unreachable (at a profit) with our resources.

Many markets are difficult to reach and sell to. Also don't get
into thinking that you can reach every market on the internet - you
can't. For some things, craft items in particular, it's way easier
to sell them in person than from a website. Most people need a
tactile experience of some kind to make a buying decision with
hand-crafted goods.

You may find me obsessed with hand-crafted stuff... after all we
live in a world filled with manufactured commodities - cel phones,
ipods, automobiles, kitchen appliances... yet there is no substitute
for craftsmanship in fitting a house with wooden trim. If you want
to live in a world of plastic - fine... but for me and many others
the good life is to be in nature and have goods made from natural
materials.

When you become wealthy (and you will, won't you?) will you live in
a world of plastic and metal - atop a skyscraper? Or will your
dwelling be decorated with wood and other natural materials? There
is no right or wrong answer - It's just that there is a good chance
than you like me would choose to have handmade things around you
because they simply feel good to have around.

YET...

If we are marketing online we owe it to ourselves to make sure that
what we offer serves compelling needs and greeds in our target market.
This is the unpleasant reality of it. People won't buy unless they have
an intense ITCH to scratch and our offering strikes them as a way to
scratch it easily.

Many, many products that may seem fascinating to sell just don't
scratch the itch in enough easily reached people to be massively
profitable.... and if you are in business you might as well shoot for
the low hanging fruit - the massively profitable products that can
be sold to an easily reached market.

Its an old saying. In a nutshell - if somebody isn’t doing right,
if he’s lying or he’s doing something he doesn’t feel proud of...
And you are pretty sure of it - just give him enough rope and
he’ll hang himself.

Show his colors, as they say.

You know, I’ve been called arrogant and some people no doubt
condemn my business as being a lowly form of money-grubbing.
The truth is that money is a motivation but its not a higher
priority than integrity or honesty to me.

I called an old lead today. It was a guy who had expressed
serious interest in Jaguar Platinum a while back and he had
never followed through. I called him to see if he was still
in the market for an income program.

As soon as he learned what I was calling about he told
me he wasn’t looking anymore because he had found something.

Immediately he boasted of his income to me. I didn’t ask
and I’m unimpressed by income claims, but he bragged anyway.

Our conversation was very brief. As soon as he finished
telling me how much money he was planning to make in
the next month and telling me he was on the fast track -
well I just told him right out :

“I’m not interested in cash gifting,”

He said, “I feel sorry for you,” and hung up on me.

As soon as this guy’s very crude attempt to bully me into
giving him money (its cash gifting so there is no product
or value promised in the transaction) he basically spit
on me.

Yeah. Thats what it felt like. It felt like he spat in
my face.

I have encountered such things before of course. But
here’s the thing –

This man claimed to be in business of a sort. But as soon
as he revealed his contempt for me - because I just said,
in a nutshell :

“I’m not going to send you cash in the mail for nothing,”

His response of saying, “then I feel sorry for you,”
is totally unprofessional and not even decent human
behavior.

Now THAT tells me everything. It tells me his motivation
is unmitigated self-interest and greed. It tells me that this
man does not feel good about himself and what he is doing.
It tells me he probably doesn’t sleep well at night.

...because he has put his desire for money as a primary
value, far more important to him than respect for other
people.

Now this in fact coincides with my views about cash gifting
programs - that they appeal to unmitigated greed, not the
desire to add value and respect to the marketplace.

This guy just confirmed my opinion.

So don’t call me asking me if I would like to participate in
a cash-gifting plan. I won’t do it. Its ammoral and warped
in my opinion and it's asking for trouble.

I can feel dozens of people unsubscribing right now...
people who have got themselves involved in these things.

ANYHOW - when you express contempt for a person who
isn’t interested in joining your program you establish very
firmly a picture in that person’s mind of who you are and
what you are about.

Now I WILL ADMIT that every time I talk with a good
business prospect and the person doesn’t move forward
I feel a twinge of disappointment.

I sometimes feel like I’m not a very good salesman. Sometimes
I doubt the value of the persuasiveness of my writing and
sometimes I wonder if somehow I have offended the other
person.

I’ve been at this for awhile though and I have a pretty
thick skin. I don’t take rejection personally but I do wonder
if I could have presented everything in a better way.

Its been a point of pride for me that I try to take the viewpoint
of the guy or girl who is just starting out and wants to make
some money. I know they want wealth but they also want
the truth about things. SO I tell it like it is:

- Success takes work, more than you expect it to. Its not
like the WORK is done in breezzy interludes between
martinis. You have to apply yourself on a daily basis.

- You have to read and educate yourself to do this business
effectively.

- Most people who stumble in this business do so out of
ignorance.

- Marketing on the internet is NOT a thing you do for
a couple of minutes now and then, especially at first
you need to take some time to learn how to do it. Only
after you have built a foundation in your marketing efforts
can you ease-off and watch the systems work on their own,
automatically.

- Mentoring and coaching and all that stuff helps, but you
have to have a passion for what you are doing first and
foremost. If you are going to be a successful marketer you
need to take an ACTIVE INTEREST in EDUCATING
YOURSELF on the subject.

I know that when you are just starting out in business you
have limited resources. Thats why I teach and encourage
you to do all sorts of things that are NOT glamorous,
sweat-equity activities that save you money and build
your experience at the same time.

I’m a good sponsor because I am actually a down-in-trenches
marketer - and I’m good at it only because I worked hard
to get where I am.

I don’t want you to perceive success with any Bigger-ticket
program like Jaguar-ms.com or Liberty League to be an easy
ticket to getting rich.

Sure, these things can be profitable business ventures but ONLY
if and when you go to work like I did.

And treating people with respect.

And getting straight on your values.

Because success, if its built on lies and contempt for other
people isn’t a success most of us would want.

And I suppose I feel sorry for the man who feels sorry
for me - because I don’t have to boast about earnings to
know I am doing something worthwhile - or to enroll
people in my business.

WHY is that?

Simple.

I add value to the marketplace.

All real wealth is built by bringing value to the marketplace
and understanding your potential customers. This is basic
stuff. It’s in famous books like Think and Grow Rich - it’s
self-evident in our normal buying behavior. We want to get
value for our dollars.

Look for ways you can do that and you can make a lot of
money.

And you’ll be able to sleep at night. Something I suspect
the man I spoke with could not do.

I have been doing some social networking lately. ie. Myspace, facebook, etc...

Its a great way to promote a blog and get people interested in doing some

business with you.

Most of my "friends" on these sites are other network marketers who are hoping

to get leads and signups just by advertising. Such methods seem very frustrating

to me and very time-consuming as well. I generate my leads and promote my

business with social networking too, but its only a small part of what I do to build

the business.

How To Get More Eyes on Your Blog With Less Work

You are at least doing some things well by having a blog. I imbedded my Blogger

blog in my myspace with something called springwidgets... easier than messing

around with the awkward HTML of the myspace system. You might check it

out... this way you can have one blog feeding into profiles on a many social

networking sites automatically.

I See This Every Day...

People often want to know if I am interested in joining an MLM or something

and I have to be honest - I'm not in the market for a new opportunity. Its not

because I don't see value in all the excellent MLMs out there - Its because the

programs I choose to promote are producing excellent results for me and I see

no reason to change my focus. I get "prospected" at least once a day by somebody

who desperately wants to put me in his/her downline... and thats understandable

because some of my marketing is polished and people would like to have that

skill working on their behalf.

I aways (reluctantly) turn them down, though, and here's why...

I'm focussed on the bigger-ticket direct sales.. which means Pay-to-play more

or less... I find that lots of MLM guys are eventually attracted to the bigger-ticket

things eventually, and even set up a free referral program where I pay people

$1000 or more for customers they send my way - a great way to pull more cash

out of the leads you are already working with.

If that "cash on the back-end" sort of thing interests you give me a holler and

I'll let you know how easy it is to start earning 1000s monthly on top of your

current MLM earnings. Its just as easy as building an MLM but the money

is nicer up-front. No investment required either - because its a referral program

and my team handles the closes... all you do is invite some people to a website

or call and let me know who you invited so I know who earned the $1000

commission. Its an independent contractor arrangement - a J.O.B. so there

isn't any cost to you to do it. I can even give you some leads to get started with.

Network Marketing is an amazing industry - with some warts on its behind. Its hard sometime to see so many people struggling and engaging in almost 100% ineffective marketing... and blind to the real potential of networking as well.

Let me clarify that, because that is a "SAY WHAT!" type of statement.

Chance are you aren't the sort of person who is looking for the business opportunities I promote. There are a lot of reasons for this. Some of my stuff is a lot of money to get going, so maybe you aren't financially qualified... or maybe you are better off promoting diet pills or vitamins or whatever because of the type of person you are and the type of people you know.

Its not personal... its just a matter of what YOUR interests and desires for success direct you to. I promote personal development/ training programs that cost a good chunk of dough to get going. Chances are you aren't ready to take that step... or you are already promoting some big-ticket thing and are better off sticking with that - at least until you turn a profit on your investment.

I would rather assist you to have more success with YOUR current opportunity... unless its a gifting scheme (which are illegal, lets not debate about this, okay?).

I would rather see you "get" network marketing and "give" it a good name by building a business that is actually working for you, breaking even or even putting money in the bank.

You already know that I am successful in this whole internet
crazy thing.

When I first began I thought it would simple and easy and
making money online would be like shooting fish in a
barrel.

It wasn't. My skills were sorely lacking in several areas.

Pretty early on I realized I had to improve in order to prosper.

Seems pretty obvious, right?

The problem was: I didn't know which areas of improvement were
the ones I should work on first.

Some folks say its all about personal development, others that
its all about "systems", others that its all about being more
marketing savvy...

You know the truth? Its a combination of all these things.

True - you need to work on having a "success mindset".

True - you do need "systems" working for you.

True - you do need to become more marketing savvy than the
average person.

When you own and operate a business - any business - your primary
responsibility it marketing that business. Thats the job. If you
do that job well, you will see growth.

I didn't get where I am as an online marketer by not working hard...
I did work hard, and I continue to do so. Chances are pretty
good that YOU are actually more ambitious and money-motivated than
I am.

You see - I find all this internet stuff INTERESTING and FUN...most
of the time. I'm having a ball studying and reading and writing
to promote my income streams.

If you don't have some kind of entusiasm for anything other than
making money you will likely find the internet frustrating.

Every day I see people marketing MLMs online who just want ME to
join under THEM so they can make some money. Thats a backwards
approach, because they often don't know enough about me to know
that I am already having success in areas where they are not.

those are just systems... and they are good ones that I stand

I have left a "trail" of information all over the internet... all
of it based on good-quality, no B.S. information.

I am a no B.S. type of guy. I'll tell you right out - unless
you are willing to really knuckle down and work hard to build
"momentum" in your business you probably won't have much success.

The money comes from consistency.

It comes as a result of consistently working to improve yourself
and your skills.

Don't Sell Your "friends" - Offer to Serve Them

Self-promotion is the only reliable way to make money in "networking" online. A lot of folks go about it in a completely upside down way.

They say, "look at this opportunity, join it now so I will make some money,"

This is not the way to be an attractive person. Other people will be repulsed by such a brazenly self-serving message.

Instead say, "let us find what we have in common. Perhaps some wisdom I have earned will assist you in some way. Lets have some friendly dialog and share some resources that you feel are valuable,"

If a person does not respond to this sort of sincere inquiry there is not much you can do but continue to offer. Somebody who does not answer an offer of assistance is unlikely to join your business opportunity anyway.

Always work to be helpful to people and make them feel good about networking with you. Have compassion for others because many of them have it quite bad and have very little money or resources to invest in programs and schemes. Many successful people are not really looking for new programs because they are already having good results with what they are doing.

Here's an example. I got pitched 3 MLM programs by 4 different people this week. These people all approached me as if my big problem was that I wasn't enrolled in the MLM they were promoting.

Nobody's problem is that they haven't joined your MLM yet.

If you can get clear on this you can start to have better results with your networking activities.

This isn’t easy sometimes even for experienced network marketers. Its easy to fall into the trap of forcing your solutions onto other people without truly understanding what those people desire and making a diligent assessment of how you can help.

Enrolling everybody you meet in your business is not only not possible, its not socially appropriate for you to do it and behaving as if it were will land you in the NFL club (No Friends Left). While its true its easier to make “friends” on social networking sites, the same rules of etiquette that you would apply to your friends from church and work apply.

For many people in network marketing the word “network” means getting into a conversation where a business opportunity may be pitched to another person. This is actually putting the cart before the horse and will make some people dislike you for being a self-involved person.

AND WHEN People Dislike You Because You Are Pushy - They Won’t Want To Be Your Friend And They Won’t Join Your Business.

Friendly networking on social networking sites is or should be different from your prospecting activities. Most people on social networking sites are familiar with the fact that there are business opportunities and may be promoting one or more themselves.

Third Rule of Networking: Strive for rapport. If you don’t have rapport its because one or both of the people in the conversation is not LISTENING or really being interested in what the other person has to offer.

Sorry to break it to you. Email marketing has changed a lot
since the days when you could recruit lots of buyers into
an MLM with unsolicited emails.

When email was more of a novelty people were excited whenever
they received an email, no matter who it was from. Furthermore,
the idea of making money online was new and people might
have been skeptical, but they were also open to looking at
new oppportunities.

These days a lot of folks have been burned by responding to
hypey email offers. Also people are downright hostile to
unsolicited email... they call it SPAM.

There are laws governing the sending of unsolicited email.
Basically, its illegal and its only effective with with
massive numbers and with products like Viagra and, well,
you know the other types of things.

Basically, unsolicited bulk email is JUNK email to everybody
that gets it. Only a small sampling of people like to read
junk mail and the same goes for email.

There is HOPE for email marketing however.

The trick to marketing is that you need to put a lot
of people into the "top" of your funnel and then you sift
through them. You can do it for a quick buck or you can
do it for long-term win-win situations. I'm interested
in the long term, so I am dedicating energy to assist more
people to get what they want... which is often to make
a little money online.

I try to give it to them straight so they know that
if they join a program and don't promote it, they won't
make money.

promotion isn't an event... its a process. The secret is
to be consistent and keep learning from your mistakes... and
also work to improve yourself so you get know what you
want (clarity on desire), are learning techniques to
get it (skills and continuing education), and are taking
Action consistently every day to move forward.

Everybody, almost, in this industry wants more traffic and

Getting Started With Web Copy

I have sponsored many people and looked at many websites of would-be internet marketers and been amazed at the lack of "reference point" in these websites.

Many sites look as if they were written by somebody who had never looked at an effective website... or at least one that makes an effort to make a good impression.

Every element - every word of text and every picture on your site should have purpose... to inspire visitors to take action and do some business with you or at least join your email list to get more information.

For many networkers the first webpages they write will be a personal branding site... and these are where the worst offenses show up.

Formatting Matters

Firstly - all >centered< text is hard to read and looks painfully amateurish. The only text that should be centered are headlines and some subheading. "Body copy" should be left justified. This is what people are accustomed to reading.

Second - Paragraphs should be short and to the point. Long paragraphs don't get read on the web, so break up long paragraphs into short ones. It took me a while to break the habit of writing long paragraphs - because I was taught long-paragraph writing in college.

Third - Include frequent "subheadings" to break up long chunks of copy, express big ideas, and draw the eye. People usually scan on the internet... and if you headlines and subheads give them a good idea of what you web page is about you are doing well. Subheads should be interesting and inspire readers to read the content below.

comments about online multi-level marketing programs

when we talk about "mlm" today we are dealing with a very
different kind of industry than in the old Amway days.

Many MLMs even today are basically built on frontloading.

frontloading is the selling of product to distributors at
a ridiculous high price that makes retail impossible. Thus
the emphaisis becomes on recruiting new associates who
will go on "autoship" in hopes of making some profits from
autoship sales in their downline.

Not far off is companies that charge big monthly fees for
service that is pretty weak. These companies are sometimes
really just paid membership sites.

I am not saying any of this is wrong.... just that in many
cases the real money is being made by company brass who are
selling shovels to the miners.

For me the criteria I look for is "no-monthly fees" to stay
in the business. With some of the new online opportunities
you do not have a business unless you have the website.

There are plenty of bizops where the company website is not
a monthly fee or is not a required purchase. These are good
ones to look at.

Most people marketing these programs online will be obliged to
promote more than one simultaneously if they want to make
profit. Monthly fees eat into those potential profit and
if you build a portfolio of bizops that have monthly fees
you may find yourself on a treadmill with the expenses
of staying active exceeding the income earned.

MLM emerged in the USA as a movement that was based in
communities. It was a distribution method for products
in a time when these types of products were not locally
available and many families had no car with which to
make shopping trips.

Today the problem with online MLM is the range of choices
available. The internet is a smorgasboard of get-rich
opportunities and the sense of community within the
people interested in these opportunities is characterized.
by a mercenary attitude among many of the leaders.

What this means is that with an MLM today, if you are building
online, your whole downline could disappear very quickly,
led by a pied piper.

The big-ticket direct sales programs are different because
successful promoters get paid up front - which at least puts
money in the pocket of the individual paying for the marketing.

A lot of people have migrated from MLM to big-ticket bizops
because of this factor.

With Multi-level Programs you generally need to build a large
organization before you make any significant money...
and those organizations have a tendency to be very fragile.

In the book Burke tells it like it is in my opinion. The best way to financial security for you and your family is by increasing YOUR value in the marketplace... not by working for somebody else.

This book is all about free enterprise and frankly its a bit of a rant. I think Burke really wants to shake Americans awake so they will recognize the phenomenal opportunities that exist in this country.

Are You Self-Motivated?

Really?

Are you sure.

I’ll bet there are limits to the areas of your life in which you have sufficient self-motivation to attain your goals.

How do I know?

Because this is part of the human condition.

WE ARE ABLE TO TAKE ACTION AND CREATE RESULTS ONLY IN THOSE AREAS OF OUR LIVES WHERE WE GET CLEAR ON WHAT WE WANT.

Would you like to lose weight? Why has this been a challenge? Could it be that there is a lack of consistent clarity on this issue?

We all do it.

I Like having a clean house. Sure. But is it a priority? Not really. I have a girlfriend for whom cleaning the house is a higher priority than it is for me. She takes action WAY before I do.

THE POINT HERE IS THAT WE ARE ALL ONLY - SELECTIVELY SELF-MOTIVATED.

Its OK.

But this is a big reason a lot of people suffer. One way of saying it is they fail to get their priorities straight.

They choose to spend there time doing things which are EASY, rather than doing the things which challenge them.

I do it. You do it too.

We are not always looking for a challenge.

BUT IF YOU ARE SUFFERING in THE AREA OF MONEY Because YOU are not rising to the CHALLENGE IMPROVING IN THAT AREA, THEN YOU HAVE A PROBLEM.

I’m not accusing you of anything. I’m merely sharing an insight here.

HERE’s an example of my own LACK OF DISCIPLINE and HOW I Deal with the consequences:

I Have a sweet tooth.
Sugar makes me crazy.
If presented with the opportunity to eat tasty, sugary foods, I will do it.
How do I control my intake?
I don’t buy these foods often and I definitely don’t bring them to the house... especially when I am alone.

I have sponsored quite a number of folks who were
all turned-on about promoting my syste, yet
did NOT promote.

Presumably life got in the way.

Most folks just don't really get their minds
around what the internet IS and what it takes
to succeed selling info-products, etc...

(selling stuff on EBAY is different. Anybody
can make some money on Ebay.)

Marketing, online or Offline, is a multifacted
discipline. Lots of folks get excited about the
money work-from-home marketers can earn... and
the lifestyle they can enjoy... yet FAIL to do
the work required to...

COMPREHEND WHAT it IS That Successful Marketers DO!

First people need to be willing to put in the
"brain time" to "GET IT"... Then they need to
put in the hours online to get the word out.

Doesn't matter if you do PPC or SEO or Blogging
for dollars, you still need to put thought, time
and effort into doing the things required to make
money online.

Most Folks just stall out sometime before they actually
Get Started.

I think a big part of the reason guys get frustrated
is they consistently "play small" with their online
efforts... not really investing much money and not
really taking much of the kind of risk real entrepreneurs
do.

Its really a case of reaping what you sow.

Sow "10 dollar profits" and it will be a long time
before you turn a profit for your time invested
in reading, learning, testingm, writing, etc...

Sow "10,000 dollar proifts" and you will find you
are playing a different game. Your customers
won't be the luckless guys who buy a $10 get-rich
ebook, and it will take more effort to locate
qualified leads... but the rewards are... well...

1000 times greater.

Fundamentally the internet is a place where
anyone can start a "business" with very low
investment of capital.

Just like in Multi-level marketing, the low
"barrier to entry" creates a situation where
most of the "business owners" have a low
level of committment... in terms of skill
aquisition, time, financial investment, and
especially marketing BUDGET.

The notion that millions can be made by anybody
who strikes a lucky vein on the internet, with
virtually no investment in advertising, is FLAWED.

Anybody who has caught a WAVE of internet promotion...
and ridden it, knows that profits ebb and flow...
and that good marketers must constantly strive to
reinvent themselves to stay on top.

MOST folks just don't have the stomach for the
risk and failures being an entreprenuer involves.

Lucky for those of us who ARE committed.

More Plain Truth About The Direct Selling Industry

When you look at the advertising for a lot on income-generating programs you would think that everybody involved is depraved, sinful, and greedy.

Its understandable...

because people who want freedom are attracted to money as the means to have it and many advertisers work that angle mercilessly.

Most people want to make more money, yes,

Don't You?

but thats because they are mostly not making enough at their J.O.B.s, lack of money is stressing them out, and they correctly assess that becoming a business owner is the logical course of action to earn more money.

Most folks are not so hung up on Ferraris and Mansions as they want to pursue things they enjoy like:

-more family time
-hobbies like horseback riding or travel

Furthermore, they generally like the idea of:

- not comuting to work
- dressing as they like, and not spending a lot on "office" clothing
- being home with their kids, pets, plants, spouses, etc...

Its not really about greed... and I know, because I speak with a lot of people who want to be in the industry.

Its about Freedom

Making Pay-PerClick work for you...

I spoke with a lady several months ago who had been marketing for many years with PPC.

She said you need to make at least $100 per sale to make PPC work out.

I CONCUR...

This was before the last crazy Google Slap... but it still illustrates something...

You gotta be smart about all sorts of things to make PPC work right.

A lot of folks get some serious PAIN of PPC advertising. From the kind of sites I see promoted with it sometimes, I am not surprised.

Of course, it really depends on your idea of a niche, etc...

There is not much harm in leading with a cheap product, but keep in mind that if given a choice between the basic model and the DELUXE MODEL, most consumers prefer the deluxe model.

If you can discipline yourself to do it, map out your whole follow-up marketing plan and have a few hundred dollars of likely upsells loaded into your system...

HOW TO MAKE AN UPSELL....

Psychologically, you are more likely to make easy upsells immediately or within a few days... as more time elapses most of your buyers will probably realize they won't use any product they bought from you and won't be in buying mode
anymore.

I am OUT-ON-A-LIMB with the above statement, I know.

BUT THINK ABOUT IT... how many times have you invested $20 or $30 in some Info-Product fully intending to use it and done nothing?

DOING NOTHING IS THE HEART OF THE HUMAN CONDITION?

Thats really why 99% of success is said to rest in just...

S.H.O.W.I.N.G. U.P.

Most of your buyers WONT, so don't expect them to. DELIVER VALUE, monetize the relationship as fast as possible... follow-up like crazy...

AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE MAKING MONEY or at least breaking even on Your front-end products.

Creating Movement in Your Life

This is a blog about making money and home-based business. Its also a blog about the process of movement in our own minds that makes success possible.

What do wealthy people do that poor people do not do?

The answer is not simple. Wish it were. There are a whole slew of things wealthy people do diffrently from poor people.

One of the most relevant is that they have movement in their lives. They don't allow themselves to "Get Stuck" in situations that aren't going anywhere.

You can change the situation or you can change the person experiencing the situation. If that person is you, changing your perception of an unsatisfactory situation...ie....

"I'm not making enough money,"

Is a matter of looking at WHO created that situation and HOW.

If you aren't happy with the trajectory of your success in life, look to who created that unsatisfactory trajectory.

Its really very simple to create MOVEMENT in our lives, yet very few people actively do so, on a daily basis.

Yet the daily habit of moving forward in attaining long-term goals...ie. "I'm going to have enough wealth to retire in 5 years and never work again," this habit is essential to making such goals come to fruition.

SO ASK YOURSELF...

Ant Invasion!

Every summer, around this time, ants invade my house. It seems to happen to everybody in the neighborhood.

The ants come searching for water, but of course, if they find anything remotely sweet they are all over it.

How I Deal With This Problem

I don’t like to kill things... so I tolerate the ants. I don’t encourage them however, so I seal-up or throw out anything they might get in to.

The ants usually move on in a few days or a week or two at most. Since I live alone, its just me tolerating them, and I am patient with the process.

Observing and Learning From Nature

I like observing the ants because they are so very determined to get what they want. They throw their lives away drowning in my sink... just to find some speck of greasy food or drop of maple syrup somewhere.

Today the infestation seems to be clearing up. They might be back once more this summer... we’ll see.

The Insect Code

Observing the ants make me think about the role determination plays in succeeding as an entrepreneur. Insects have a particular genetic code that has them hardwired for success at any cost. Ants consistently do what achieving their goal requires... and while they aren’t particularly inventive in their approach, they make up for it with dogged determination.

What Virtue?

Determination is not classically categorized as a Virtue, but for a business owner I feel it is essential. Running any business always involves meeting challenges that push us to our limits and force us to grow.

In my experience, determination to succeed is an essential quality.

After all... what is financial freedom worth too you, really?

Is it just something you’ll pursue until you meet some challenges you would rather not deal with?

Is it just a “maybe” for you? (“Maybe I’ll get rich with this business...”)

Here’s the thing, friend: Its only the people who NEVER QUIT who hit the big time and get what
they came for.

Just like those determined little ants.

What's Your Passion

There are tons of different business models where money can
be earned... a lot of it.

You might as well choose a method and product that fits with
your values and interests. The truth is very few people are
actually interested in Money.. they are interested in the freedom
that having enough money provides.

Personally I find currency interesting only for the imagery on the
bills... yet the freedom that money buys me in life is priceless.

My passion is freedom.... not money. Yet money is a shorthand,
a symbol of the "good life" to many people. I can make a lot of
of money assisting other people to lead freer, richer lives and
have more time with their families. Thats a lot of fun. While
assisting others is probably not my dominant passion in life, its
pretty high up there... which is a good thing... because its a big
part of my livelihood.

I hope this clarifies the role "passion" plays in choosing an
income opporttunity (job, bizop, whatever).

When you find a passion for what you do for money, working on
perfecting your skills becomes a pleasure, and "obstacles"
are merely stepping stones to greater comprehension of the
nature of what makes YOU happy.

Are you Avoiding Success?

It’s a loaded question. I’m qualified to ask it though, because at one time I could answer YES!

I did avoid success. I feared the responsibility of it. I feared it would change me for the worst. It hasn’t change me for the worst. Becoming successful in my business has enhanced the virtues I carry, and it will do the same for you.

If you are compassionate, it will make you more so.

If you are focused, it will make you more so.

If you are energetic, it will make you more so.

Success isn’t merely measured by money, its measured by how we take charge of our own lives and how we deal with challenges. Success is a journey.

Yet many, many people never really feel successful in their lives. Chances are even YOU don’t feel as if you are reaching your fullest potential. That is a good thing. Knowing that can assist you to become successful .

Here’s the secret - “successful” people never feel they have reached full potential, they always want to keep growing.

Last night I was stung by a bee, on my right thumb. The bee was on the cap of a bottle of essential oil I picked up. I didn’t see her and she stung me almost instantaneously.

My first reaction was to cry out (in fact, I swore). My second reaction was to feel compassion for the bee, who would die within an hour. My third reaction was to embrace the pain, to go into it and experience it fully.

How many of us go through life avoiding pain, avoiding risk, avoiding the unknown? I know I did for much of my early life.

My consciousness around pain shifted however. Soon, I began to think how this all relates to the experience of becoming successful as a business owner.

The thing is - and its always the same thing with Personal Growth - is that the experience of change in never comfortable. Change can be exciting, it can pump us up, but it can also fill us with fear...

Unless we make the Decision to become as fearless as possible, to adopt the warrior spirit.

Recently I was speaking with a new friend who had participated in the Sun Dance. Sun Dance is a native American ritual where they insert skewers through the flesh of your chest. To complete the ritual, the participant must tear the skewers from his chest (I suppose women do this too, but I have never met one), which is, I am sure, Exquisitely painful.

The only way to handle this sort of pain is to transcend it and embrace the feeling of pain.
